Out-of-date bright brass towel racks can be updated with a simple can of spray paint. Transform glaring yellow brass into a contemporary new towel rack by applying bronze, black or even silver paint. Don't forget to paint additional brass fixtures in the bathroom, including toilet paper holders and light fixtures. The same paint method can be applied.
Instructions
1. Remove the towel rack from the wall. Clean it using warm, soapy water and a sponge. Dry the towel rack. Make sure all debris has been removed by cleaning the surface with rubbing alcohol and letting it dry.
2. Use a fine grit sandpaper to scuff up the brass surface of the towel bar. Lightly sand the bar to give the paint coat additional grip. Use a damp cloth to wipe down the towel rack after sanding.
3. Place the towel rack on an old piece of cardboard, drop cloth or large sheet of plastic. Shake the spray paint for about 10 seconds. Hold the nozzle of the spray paint 4 to 6 inches from the surface of the towel rack. Move the nozzle back and forth as the paint is released. Do not apply a thick amount of paint; light even coats are best. Remember, several coats may be needed for a solid, opaque finish. Allow paint to dry two to four hours between coats. Replace towel rack onto the wall.
