Spray Painting Equipment Tips

Spray painting is a manageable home painting project.

Spray painting can be performed by nearly anyone; all you need is a bit of space and something to paint, and ensure that when you are spray painting you have a lot of ventilation. An outdoor space is ideal. A garage with an open door is suitable as well. A few equipment tips can help the job along. Controlling the paint spray is the key.

Drop Cloths

Spray paint will carry for a good distance in the air. If you are painting outside, the breeze can take the minuscule paint droplets quite a number of yards from your paint site. Drop cloths are essential to protect items around your paint job. Thin, inexpensive plastic is fine. Use weights like stones or bricks so the drop cloths don't blow around. Cover surrounding items like bikes or shelving. You may even want to hang plastic sheeting to create a mini-booth if you are doing a lot of spray painting.

Respirator

A respirator is a good piece of safety equipment if you are spray painting a lot. The fumes are bad for your health, and the respirator will go a long way toward protecting you from the toxins when used properly. Respirators can be uncomfortable after long periods, so take some breaks, and change the filters according to the directions as they lose their effectiveness over time.

Tape, Masks and Stencils

Tape and masks can protect areas on your painting project, whether it is an outdoor chair or other item, from flying paint, which is especially helpful if you are using more than one color. Masks can be made from cut cardboard into various shapes. They also can help you create patterns or lines on your subject if you are painting a flat surface, for instance. Stencils may be bought or created at home; they are superb for quickly repeating a form like a letter or geometric shape.
