Your child's birthday should be about fun, not stress.
Your child's eighth birthday is certainly cause for celebration. By this point, your child and her friends are old enough to enjoy more structured activities that require more than 30 seconds of attention. Offer suggestions, but ask your child directly where she would like to have her birthday party. Remember, a creativity-planned party can be just as fun as an extravagant one.
Painting Pottery
For the artistically inclined 8 year old, many local pottery painting studios, like The Clay Cafe in Sewickley, Pennsylvania, or Clay Cafe in Columbus, Ohio, offer birthday party rates for groups of more than 10 children. Kids choose from a wide range of already-fired plates, mugs, figurines and tiles and paint them in the studio. Select a dozen possible figures under a certain price and have each childr select the one she wants to paint. You will pay a studio fee per child, usually fewer than than $10, in addition to the cost of each child's clay piece. Items are ready for pick up with a week. Additional accommodations such as party rooms, decorations, forks and cake differ between studios.
Party at Your House
Your 8 year old's birthday party can be just as fun inside or outside your house. Some kids this age benefit from a little direction, so plan games and contests ahead of time. Suggest games like a scavenger hunt or hide-and-seek in addition to classic games like pin the tail on the donkey. Do not worry if they are more interested in playing their own games instead of the ones you suggest. Explain the house rules clearly beforehand and point out specifically any restricted activities or rooms.
Pool Party
A pool party is a great birthday location at an indoor center in the winter or at a local country or sports club in the summer. Many children this age have mastered the basic swimming skills. The children spend the first few hours draining their energy in the water and enjoy cake and ice cream afterward in a separate party or meeting room. Some facilities will provide decorations, plates, cake and towels, but others do not. Explain clearly what items the guests should bring on the invitation, such as a towel, shampoo and bathing suit.
Sports Center
Many sports clubs or game centers offer arcade sections in addition to basketball courts, batting cages and air hockey tables. The kids play for a few hours and then have cake and ice cream in a private party room. Visit the sports center before making the reservation to ensure they have enough age-appropriate games. Some sports centers offer decorations, cake and plates for an additional fee, while others require you to bring your own.
