Get Fresh paint Designs Off A Shirt

Re-purpose a shirt using household items.

You can re-fashion a shirt by removing the paint design that is currently on the clothing. Professionally-manufactured designs may be difficult to remove because of the heating process that seals the paint to the fabric. Hand-crafted designs may be easier to remove due to the less intense manufacturing process. Depending on how the design was applied, you may be able to remove it. After the design has been removed, you can re-paint the shirt, apply appliques or leave the shirt blank.

Instructions

Water-Based Paint

1. Scrape off as much of the paint as possible. Use anything with a sharp or slightly rounded edge to get gently peel up the paint.

2. Run the shirt under warm water to loosen the paint. Designs washed many times may have some peeling edges, which will make removing the design easier. Newer paint designs may need to be scraped to help pry up the paint.

3. Combine one cup of warm water and one cup of dish soap. Use a rag to vigorously scrub the design off the shirt. The soap mixture will help loosen the paint. Rinse with warm water.

4. Repeat step three until paint all paint is removed. Use the scraper to peel any remaining paint off. Rinse and repeat if necessary.

5. Apply acetone nail polish remover to the shirt to remove stubborn paint designs. Use a rag to apply the acetone to the paint. Use the scraper to help peel off the design.

Oil-Based Paint

6. Scrape as much of the paint off as possible. Use anything with a sharp or slightly rounded edge to get gently peel up the paint.

7. Use a rag to soak up paint if it is still wet. Rinse the shirt in warm water and wring dry. Avoid letting the fabric dry, if possible.

8. Place a white rag or towel on a work surface. Place the paint, face down, onto the towel. Blot the back of the fabric with turpentine until the paint starts to transfer onto the white towel. Replace the towel with a clean one and repeat the process. Stand on the shirt if necessary to add weight to help transfer the paint to the towel. Repeat if necessary.

9. Soak the shirt in pure dish soap overnight. The soap will help loosen the paint from the fibers. Rinse the shirt in the morning with clean water and launder it completely.

10. Repeat steps two through four if the paint is still on the shirt.
