Popular House Fresh paint Colors

Exterior colors can influence a house's market value.

According to Majon International, the color of a house's exterior can influence not only its value, but the value of all the houses in a given neighborhood. Homeowner associations often create a limited list of colors members can paint their houses for this very reason and historical houses also usually come with such restrictions. The most popular house paint colors are popular because of aesthetic value, availability and cost.

White

White has been the most popular color for painting house exteriors for several years prior to 2010, according to the Yellow Pages. White is not only appealing and coordinates well with any trim color, but it gives an impression of brightness, cleanliness and visibility.

Gray

Gray is the second most popular exterior color. Majon International states, however, that Realtors warn against the darker shades. Lighter, brighter shades of gray provide for a house that, in turn, appears brighter and more spacious--and therefore more appealing.

Blue

Blue is the third most popular exterior house color, partially because there is such a wide variety of pleasant hues and shades. Many shades of blue also complement a variety of trim colors, according to the Yellow Pages.

Other Colors

Shades of tan and brown are the fourth most popular house paint colors, followed by yellow, green and beige. Most houses, however, are painted in softer, more earthy tones. Many of those colors follow a historical theme, such as colonial green.

Trim and Accents

Realtors recommend painting brighter colors only on shutters and the front door of a home, according to Majon International, particularly if it's on the market. To increase the chance of a sale, homes should be the most appealing to the most number of people. However, painting the front door an inviting color, like red or blue, can put buyers in a good mood when entering the space.
