Tips About Painting High Walls

With the right tools and technique you can paint high walls yourself.

High walls often indicate high ceilings, a definite gift for a room. High walls give a room an inherent sense of spaciousness, making the space feel larger and more open. Opting to paint such walls is a bold choice as color gives such a room definite character. When painting a room with high walls, a few tips can make the process flow more smoothly.

Paint the Ceiling a Dark Color

Give the ceiling of a room with high walls a splash of color, not simply as a welcome break from the color white but to cause the eye to naturally wander up to the ceiling, allowing you to appreciate the entire space. Painting the ceiling a dark color, like hunter green or wine red, makes the walls of the room appear shorter. Dark colors advance forward to make the entire room seem slightly less cavernous.

Use the Proper Tools

For painting very high walls, you will either need an extension ladder or an extension pole for your roller or both to reach the area of the walls near the ceiling. Practice using your roller with the extension pole attached before you paint by rolling the clean, dry roller on the top of the walls. Don't overlap the lines of paint as too much overlapping becomes visible when the paint dries, particularly if the room gets a lot of sunlight. Add foam pads to the top sides of the ladder when using it against the wall so you don't mark up your wall.

Follow Safety Precautions

If you don't feel comfortable on an extension ladder, don't use one. You can't concentrate on doing a good paint job if you're worried about falling off the ladder and hurting yourself. An option other than a ladder is to rent scaffolding, which will provide you with a larger platform to perch on when painting, hopefully putting you more at ease. Unfortunately, renting scaffolding adds an additional cost to your paint job. If you do opt to use an extension ladder, employ basic safety techniques of ladder usage. For example, if the ladder is against a door, either keep the door open so visitors can see the ladder, or lock the door so people can't enter and knock you off your ladder while you're painting. Position the bottom of the ladder outwards one foot for each four feet of height.
