Finish Wooden shutters

Shutters add style to your home.

Shutters frame your windows and add visual appeal to your home's exterior. Available in vinyl, wood, resin and metal, you can paint your shutters any color you like. Because shutters often have small slats or other details, spraying on the finish will give you the best results. You can rent a paint sprayer from an equipment rental store and make quick work of finishing your shutters.

Instructions

1. Remove the shutters from the house, if they are already in place.

2. Sand the shutters to remove rough areas or to buff off the gloss of existing paint. New vinyl, resin and metal shutters may not need sanding.

3. Wash the shutters with a solution of trisodium phosphate (TSP) mixed with water, as directed on the package. Sponge the solution on and scrub, if needed, to remove dirt or debris. Rinse with clear water and let the shutters dry completely.

4. Lay the shutters horizontally on buckets or other small flat objects that allow the sides of the shutters to hang over freely.

5. Strain your primer through a paint strainer to remove lumps that could clog the sprayer.

6. Fill the reservoir of the airless paint sprayer with exterior primer and spray a light, even coat over the shutters, using side-to-side motions from at least 12 inches away. If you're finishing pre-primed shutters, you can skip this step. When spraying shutter slats, direct the spray stream into the gaps between the slats for the best coverage.

7. Let the primer coat dry. Clean out the sprayer reservoir. Strain your paint through a paint strainer to remove lumps that could clog the sprayer. Fill the reservoir with exterior paint or enamel. Again, spray on only a thin coat to prevent runs. Let the paint dry according to the drying time noted on the paint container, before proceeding.

8. Add one or more additional thin coats of paint, spraying each one on in the same manner, until you have the finish you like.
