It all starts with a fresh coat of paint.
If you want to change the color (or colors) of a room, you might want to get an idea of how things will look before you actually start painting. While many people will do this using swatches and even colored drawings, a better way might be to create a 3-D virtual room in which you can instantly adjust the color as many times as it takes to get something you like. You might have thought that this would require the assistance of a professional, but several consumer-level programs could help you do this.
Google SketchUp
Google SketchUp is a freeware utility for creating and texturing 3-D models. After using the 3-D modeling tools in Google to create the model of the room you want, you can use the "Get Models" tab and add furniture that roughly matches yours, placing it where you like in the room. This helps you to better judge any changes that you make to the color of the walls. You can then use the "Paint Bucket" to bring up the "Materials" dialog. A number of colors and textures you apply to a section of the room by just clicking on the section. You can repeat this to apply colors to the rest of the room. These colors can be switched for others as you develop you decor. Save your work.
Hexagon
Hexagon is a 3-D modeling program marketed by Daz 3-D. It can be used to create 3-D models of almost anything, including rooms, to which you can then apply colors. Once you have used the 3-D modeling tools under "Vertex" and "Surface" modeling to convert a cube primitive into a room, you can then apply colors to the walls. To do this, you simply click on the "Material/Shading" tab on the left and provide a "New Domain" for each section of the room you might want to be a different color. Change the color of that section in the "Materials" section. You can import 3-D furniture models and place them in the room to help you judge the colors you used. You can then change the colors if wish. Save your work.
Poser
One of the most popular consumer 3-D applications is the Smith Micro product Poser. You can easily use the "prop" primitives in Poser to create walls and a floor for a room. Then (just as with Hexagon) you can import 3-D models into the scene. To add colors to the walls, select a section. Click on the "Material Room" tab at the top, and change the "Diffuse" color to the color you want that section of the room to be. Repeat this for each section of the room. Save your work.
