Color Painting Ideas

Choose a paint color that accomplishes something.

Repainting is one of the easiest, and most affordable, ways to give a room in your house a makeover. Sometimes all a tired, old room needs to have new life breathed into it is a few fresh coats of paint. Choosing the color is the hard part, but these simple schemes can help you decide on a look that's right for your style and your room.

Small Spaces

The right color can open up a small space, making it seem bigger. The biggest room in the house in particular, such as the living room, can make the entire house feel cramped and tight or cozy but free. Light, cool colors tend to open up a space. If you want to make a small room feel bigger, select a light blue, light yellow, earthy tan, playful pink or spring green color for your walls.

Big Spaces

Sometimes your problem with space isn't that you don't have enough of it but rather that you have too much. A big house with wide open spaces can be wonderful for entertaining, but it can also make a room look barren and empty, particularly if you have an open floor plan that blends multiple rooms together without dividing walls to separate the space. Here, paint can be used to complement existing furniture and make a large space feel more intimate. Rich browns, deep reds and bold blue hues can all be used effectively to make a large room feel smaller.

Accent Wall

Sometimes, a theme can be established for an entire room by painting one wall an accent color and leaving the other walls white. Perhaps you want to turn your basement into a man-cave in your team's colors or maybe you want to infuse style into a large living room so it looks lived in as opposed to fresh out of construction. Consider the conditions of the room to decide which wall to paint with your accent color. In a basement or living room, it may be the longest wall in the room, or the wall with a fireplace or interesting architectural element like a staircase. It may also be the wall that receives the most natural light; painting it in a color that is either dramatically different or just a few shades darker can make your room take on an entirely new personality.

Themes

Other times, you may want to transform a room in your house into a space where you can escape to another country or mood. A theme can be created with a few pieces of accent furniture and the right color scheme. A den can be transformed into a modern art museum with a black and white walls accentuated by bright, dramatic art and furniture. A bathroom can become a nautical haven with a light to royal blue and tan or cream color theme. Make a kitchen feel bright and joyful with bold, crisp yellows, reds, greens, oranges or purples.
