The arts and crafts style is a design movement that uses geometric shapes in the vein of Frank Lloyd Wright, exposed beams and shingled roofs. There aren't any firm rule on paint colors except that they should be natural looking. The arts and crafts style often utilizes natural stone, wood shakes and other earthy materials to "blend with natural surroundings," writes "Coastal Living" magazine.
Browns and Beiges
Use several colors on the exterior of the house, recommends Craftsman Perspective. For example, if you have a stucco and wood shingle house, then "choose a light color for the stucco--taupe, coffee au lait, or a light reddish tan--and a medium tone for the shingles--such as rust or dusty blue." Paint the the trim white or a darker tone of the paint you used on the shingles or stucco.
Blues and Grays
Sherwin Williams paint company offers an arts and crafts color palette that includes varying shades of gray and blue. Think of the colors of natural stone, concrete, river rocks and the river itself. These colors blend in nicely to natural environments.
Yellows
Select a yellow exterior paint in a muted mustard or gold. Arts and crafts colors are not bright. They aren't always soft either. They are simple and muted. Make the house colors interesting and creative with the trim color you choose. With a yellow color, brown, white or hunter green works well.
