Be sure you understand the operation of your paint gun before using it.
Pneumatic paint guns produce a smooth finish that can't be duplicated with brushes or rolls. It takes a fair amount of time to understand use a paint gun properly in order to get the smooth finish you are looking for. Preparing the paint is perhaps the easiest step in using a paint gun. However, incorrect preparation will clog the paint gun. Since each paint gun is a little different, read the directions on yours before preparing.
Instructions
1. Choose the type of paint you would like to use. Oil-based paints are the easiest to use with a paint gun. Latex and acrylics will take more thinner to be able to flow through the siphon.
2. Add a small amount of thinner to the paint well until it covers the siphon hose.
3. Stir the paint thoroughly.
4. Pour the paint through a strainer to remove any buildup or chunks. These chunks will clog up your spray gun.
5. Thin the paint. Use the appropriate thinner for your paint. You need a 15- to 20-percent mix of thinner to paint.
6. Aim your paint gun into a waste basket and spray the thinner through the gun. This will prime the gun and allow you ensure that it is working properly. Empty the remaining thinner back in its original container.
7. Fill the paint reservoir two-thirds full of paint.
8. Test your paint on your test surface. Pull the trigger gently and paint in one long sweeping motion.
