Painting wall outlets and covers is a quick fix for an eyesore in a room.
Wall outlets and outlet covers can be an eyesore in an older home or a forgotten design element in new construction. Personalize and update your space by addressing the design possibilities of your outlets. Instructions
Prepare the Outlet Cover
1. Outlet covers are attached with small screws.
Remove the outlet cover from the wall using a screwdriver or purchase a fresh new outlet cover from your hardware store.
2. Put aside the screws and wash the outlet cover with warm soapy water. Dry.
3. Turn power off and wash outlets carefully with a small cloth.
4. Sand the outlet cover and outlet with fine gauge sandpaper lightly. When you take the sheen off the cover and rough up the surface, you allow paint to adhere more easily.
5. Dust off cover to remove sanding powder.
6. Paint a coat of white over the entire surface of the cover and outlet to create a fresh "canvas."
To Paint an Artistic Cover
7. Trace the outlet cover on a piece of paper.
8. Determine a design. A floral motif, a child's name and handprint or apples and oranges may be choices depending on the d cor of the room the outlet cover is intended for.
9. Draw out your idea on the paper template. Consider incorporating the switch or outlet mechanism into your design if possible.
10. Use small paintbrushes and acrylic paint to paint your design onto the outlet cover. Allow paint to dry thoroughly.
11. Spray with a clear sealant to protect the project.
12. Screw the outlet cover back into place.
13. Carefully paint the outlet to blend in with your design.
14. Turn power back on.
