Restoring the exterior stairs of a home often requires a new coat of paint, or at least that the existing paint on the stairs be removed. The task may appear intimidating but can be accomplished using the proper method and the right materials. Outdoor stairs are typically made of stone, wood or concrete, all of which can be safely treated with a commercial paint thinner. The solvent combined with the necessary tools can help complete the task in a timely matter.
Instructions
1. Clean any loose dirt or residue from the stairs with a damp rag or mop and a mild detergent. Paint thinner will need to be applied in a smooth, even coat for the best results.
2. Select a paint thinner suited for the task. Liquid or aerosol applications are appropriate for removing one to two layers of paint, while paste-like formulas can effectively remove several layers at a time.
3. Protect your skin against alkaline burns with a pair of rubber gloves. Carefully apply the solvent to one painted step on the stairs at a time; use a paint roller, paint brush or aerosol spray can according to the manufacturer's recommendation.
4. Allow the paint to dissolve for the instructed period of time before proceeding. Begin lifting the dissolving paint with a putty knife or paint scraper until it appears to thin.
5. Rinse the loosened paint with water and scrub the surface with a wire brush or steel wool to remove the remainder. Let the stairs air dry for a full 24 hours before applying new coat of paint.
