Fresh paint Slate Roofing

Slate roofing is durable, but the drab gray color can become tedious over time.

Slate tiles provide a durable roofing method that has been used on homes for several centuries. You can expect the slate roofing tiles to last from 45 to over 100 years, making a slate roof a long-lasting feature of your home. In the event that the uniform grey color of the tiles no longer fits the image you wish for your home, you can paint them to add a splash of color to the exterior.

Instructions

1. Select the color of paint that you are going to use on the roof. Use this paint color to select the primer that you need. Choose a light gray or white primer if you are going to use a light or bright color, or choose a dark gray primer if you are going to use dark or dull colors.

2. Climb to the roof and use the pressure washer to clean the roof tiles. Start at the peak of the roof and spray downwards to clean. Try to avoid spraying the high-pressure water upwards, as this will force water underneath the tiles.

3. Allow the cleaned tiles to dry for 1 to 2 days to ensure that they have dried completely.

4. Open the can of primer and mix thoroughly. Once on the roof, pour some of the primer into the paint tray. Cover your brush or roller and begin to paint from the peak of the rook. Be certain to paint the edges of each tile on the end and sides. Ensure that you do not paint between yourself and the ladder so that you can get off of the roof. Continue to apply the primer until the entire roof is covered. Allow time for the primer to dry -- most commercial primers dry in 24 hours.

5. Mix the exterior paint. Follow the same process that you used to apply the primer.
