Learn to become a licensed contractor in New York.

A general contractor is an individual or organization that enters work agreements with other individuals or businesses under contract for a specific project. Contractors usually perform or oversee different types of construction work that may involve demolition, remodeling, plumbing and electrical work. To become a licensed contractor in New York you will need to become registered with the state. New York state requires contractors to provide documentation to support that they are qualified to perform the duties and responsibilities of a general contractor. Contractors that operate as LLCs, corporations, partnerships or under a business name (sole proprietors) will be required to provide some additional information during registration.

Instructions

1. Register with the Department of Buildings. Contractors need to be registered with the Department of Buildings to obtain a New Buildings permit for one-, two- and three-bedroom homes. The following requirements must be met in order to register: must be 18 years old, able to read and write English, have good moral character, and be able to perform the duties of a general contractor.

2. Visit the Department's Licensing Unit in person and deliver the required documentation. Review the LIC6 General Contractor Registration Form for specific details (see Resources).

3. Return to the Department's Licensing Unit. You will receive a letter in the mail notifying you that your application has been reviewed and processed. Once you receive this letter, bring it with you to the Department's Licensing Unit to receive your registration card and make your first payment.
