How To Proceed If Latex Exterior Fresh paint Isn't Drying out

Check both the day and night time temperatures when painting something outside.

Acrylic latex paints come in a wide range of colors and different finishes - gloss, semi-gloss, and flat - making them very popular for all kinds of outdoor projects. Whether you are painting an outdoor chair, door or your whole house, latex is simple to work with and cleans up with just water. It can cover almost any material including vinyl, wood and metal. It does need to be applied properly, however, and following the instructions on the paint label will ensure that your item is covered completely and dries quickly.

Instructions

1. Wait a couple of days. It's quite possible that the air in your location is humid, causing the paint to have trouble drying. If you've come upon some rainy or very hot, humid days, you may just have to wait it out.

2. Check the temperature. Most latex exterior paints will cure best when the temperature is at least 50 degrees F, according to Sherwin Williams, a major paint manufacturer. However, if you paint during the day when it's 60 degrees and the temperature dips to 30 or 40 degrees F at night, the paint may stop coalescing, allowing moisture to get in and preventing it from sticking to the item and drying completely.

3. Repaint the item with oil-based alkyd exterior paint. Latex exterior paints can, under some conditions, remain "tacky" forever. The problem is called blocking and it can be caused by a reaction between the primer and finish coat, the temperature when it was applied (either too hot or cold) or a thick layer of paint.

4. Dry the paint completely between coats. It is possible that the coat before the final one did not dry completely, preventing the top coat from drying. You may have to start over and give each coat enough time to dry before you paint a new one.
