Flat paint and enamel paint can be mixed together, even if they're different brands, as long as they're the same type--you can't mix water-based paint with oil-based paint. Mixing different sheens together will result in a different, unpredictable sheen, depending on the proportions. Mixing high-gloss enamel with flat paint will give you a satin or semi-gloss finish. By doing this, however, you may be compromising the washability, durability and overall appearance of the paint.
Instructions
1. Double check that the paint is the same type. Don't mix exterior paint and interior paint; it won't hold up outside, and it will emit potentially harmful vapors in the interior of your house.
2. Pour the paint into a 5-gallon bucket and mix it well. Use a large stir stick or, for more thorough and easier mixing, a mixing attachment for an electric drill.
3. Pour the paint back and forth between at least two buckets several times, mixing carefully each time. This ensures the paint at the bottom of the bucket gets stirred in.
4. Test the result by painting a swatch onto a piece of scrap cardboard or wood and letting it dry. If you have plenty of paint, reserve some of the flat and the enamel so you can adjust your mix by adding more of one or the other.
5. Label the leftover paint when you're finished with the project. Store it properly for later touchups, because it will be impossible to replicate paint mixed like this.
