Connect The Yellow & Brown Colors Inside A House

Yellow paint on the wall brings a sunny feeling to a room.

The colors brown and yellow fall on the warm side of the color wheel and find favor as the colors of choice for many popular decorating styles. However, because of their close proximity on the color wheel, these colors will work well together regardless of whether or not you have chosen a decorating style that features them. This concept alone makes decorating your entire house in yellows and browns a breeze, provided that you use a few common techniques to bind the colors and the rooms together.

Instructions

1. Emphasize yellow overall for a sunny look or brown for more earthy style. The paint color you choose to be the dominant one in a room will set the tone for the entire room, so think about how you want the room to feel when selecting the room's main color.

2. Choose a decorating style that embraces these colors, like African or Japanese decorating styles, if you feel stumped for ideas for furnishings and accessories to go in your home. Furnishings and accessories will play important roles in tying the yellow and brown elements together.

3. Feature both colors throughout the house, but alternate which color dominates from room to room if you want variety. For example, in one room, you may go with brown walls with predominantly yellow accents, but in the next room yellow walls with brown accents may be most appealing to you.

4. Use furniture and accessories that feature both colors in them to bind things together. Some examples include a yellow couch with a paisley or striped pattern, throw pillows with yellow and brown checks, curtains with yellow and brown geometric patterns, or a brown throw rug with a yellow border. Not all the accessories have to have this feature, just enough to tie the two colors together in a room.

5. Extend a rug or carpet from one room into another to tie the two room together visually. A wall to wall carpet with brown and yellow elements would work well in a living room/dining room situation. In an entryway hallway, a long rug that has both colors in it binds two areas like the entryway and living room together while allowing you to expose a hardwood floor underneath.

6. Use common elements in more than one room of the home if you want a sense of style continuity. For example, if you have a set of sconces that you feature in the living room gallery, and you also have an entryway gallery, use the sconces to provide a visual tie. Make sure these elements feature yellow and brown.
