According to My Perfect Color, a paint color buying guide, the top 25 selling paint colors for a home interior includes mostly neutral shades. Saybrook Sage, Powell Buff and Monroe Bisque are the top three paint colors of the category. Saybrook Sage is a neutral color with a slight green hue. Powell Buff has a light tan base and peach hue. Monroe Bisque is a darker neutral tan color. Of the top 25 colors, only one, Maple Red Leaf, is not a neutral shade. Maple Red Leaf is a rich red paint color. House Beautiful, an online home d cor website, found that aside from neutral colors, black (i.e., French Bulldog Black) is a popular paint color for home interiors as are various shades of whites with accents of pale pinks and peaches.

My Perfect Color reports the best selling exterior paint colors of 2009 include neutral shades, rich brown tones and shades of green and blue. Among the top three exterior paint colors were Desert Tan, Monterey White and Alexandria Beige. Desert Tan is a classic tan with a slight peach hue. Monterey White is a very light-colored neutral with the faintest tint of tan. Alexandra Beige is a faded brown color. Essex Green--a deep, dark green--also made the list, as well as Gustavian Blue, which is a pale blue color like you might find on a cottage or a home in warm climates.

Individuals choose a spectrum of neutral colors ranging from cool neutrals, such as Manchester Tan and Muslin to warm neutrals, like Chestertown Buff and Roxbury Carmel. Another popular choice was Yarmouth Blue, which is a pale blue with a tint of gray. Better Homes and Gardens, a home and garden resource magazine, found that cool colors, such as light shades of purple, blue and green are a new trend for master bedrooms, especially when paired with white accents. The magazine contends that a splash of color brightens and updates a room's appearance.
