Paint will not cure properly if applied in freezing temperatures.
Most paints cure best at temperatures from 50 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit, but there are paints designed for painting in 35- to 50-degree temperatures. Oil-based paints have been used for low-temperature applications, but often result in cracking and moisture damage. A low-temp acrylic is the recommended paint for low- temperature painting. Temps at night must not drop below 35 degrees for at least four days for this paint to cure properly.
Instructions
1. Check the five-day weather report to ensure that the daytime and nighttime temperatures won't drop beneath 35 degrees Fahrenheit.
2. Scrape the surfaces to be painted with a putty knife or paint scrapping tool to remove all loose and flaking paint. Sand the broken paint edges smooth with a 120-grit sanding block. Dust away all dust particles with a dust brush.
3. Load a tube of low-temperature paintable caulk into a caulking gun. Cut the tip off with a utility knife and caulk all joints, seams and cracks. Smooth out the caulk with your fingertip and wipe away excess caulk with a painter's rag. Allow the caulk to dry according to the product's label.
4. Pour a few inches of low-temperature primer paint into a handheld paint holder. Dip the bristles of a paintbrush into the primer and paint the areas of the surface where only a paintbrush can reach. Apply the primer paint in long even strokes to ensure proper coverage.
5. Fill a five-gallon bucket with one gallon of low-temperature primer paint. Hang a metal paint roller screen from the inside lip of the bucket. Slide a 1/2-inch nap roller cover over the spindle of a 9-inch roller frame and screw and extension pole into the handle. Dip the roller up and down in the paint until the nap fibers of the roller cover are loaded with paint.
6. Roll the surface with primer paint. Roll in up-and-down or side-to-side strokes depending on the surface texture and design. Wait four to five days for the low-temperature primer paint to cure. Repeat this process for applying the low-temperature finish paint.
