The entire decor of the living room generally starts with the right paint color, and then you can choose furniture and decorative items accordingly. 2. Consider the space's natural light. If there is little to no natural light in your living room, then do not choose a dark color; this will make the room look even darker than it already it. However, if the room gets plenty of sunlight, you can use a dark or a light paint color.
3. Match paint with flooring. For example, if you have light, pastel-colored carpet in the living room, you should steer clear of dark, rich colors for your paint. The paint on the wall should compliment the flooring. Dark, rich hues of paint--such as reds, greens or blues--work well with wood flooring. Lush, thick carpeting is best accented with lighter shades of paint--think cream, light pink or blue--to balance the heaviness of the carpet.
4. Consider the architecture of the space. If your living room has a spectacular staircase, columns or crown molding, you may want to paint these elements white or another light shade that matches your primary paint hue. You can paint the walls another shade to complement the decorations and furnishings in the room.
5. Opt for dueling colors. You do not have to paint the walls and accents in your living room the same color. Choose colors that go well together, such as shades of blue or red and cream. You can paint the walls one color and then all accents, such as the baseboards, another color for added contrast in the room.
