Decorating a room with two paint colors makes the design of the room more interesting. Using two colors also offers an opportunity to highlight specific aspects of the room, such as architectural elements. The two colors can be evenly distributed throughout the room or one can be stronger than the other to gain specific interest, such as with an accent wall that stands out from the other walls.
Instructions
1. Play with schemes of color pairs using paint chips provided by paint manufacturers. Complementary colors are contrasting and will stand out against one another. Analogous colors are different shades of the same color family and will offer dimension in the room.
2. Choose an accent wall. Paint the accent wall one color and the remaining walls the second paint color. For example, in a kitchen, paint the backsplash over the sink and the area under the cabinets one color and the remaining walls a different color. Doing this introduces a focal point of design in the room. Use a roller to cover large areas with paint and use a paint brush for corners and delicate areas.
3. Accent architectural elements in the room. Use one paint color to highlight soffits and columns and the second color for the remaining surfaces. This emphasizes architectural features of a room as a point of interest.
4. Keep all trim, baseboards and moldings the same color in the room for consistency even if they are not in one of the two colors of your paints. It works to make these elements a third color because they are what will pull the room together. Use painting tape at trim edges to keep the edges clean and clear of unwanted smudges (see Reference 1). Use the paint brush to paint these areas precisely.
