Vinyl shower liners smell like chemicals and their production is harmful to the environment. A more eco-friendly option is to make your own canvas drop cloth shower liner. Canvas shower liners can be easily washed, don't smell, and naturally biodegrade when discarded. They are equally effective as vinyl liners at preventing water from spilling onto your floor.
Buying a canvas shower liner can cost up to $30 in 2009, but with the instructions below you can make your own for less than $10 with a canvas drop cloth.
Instructions
1. Purchase a large canvas drop cloth from a local hardware or retail store. The cloth should be a color of your choosing and measure 76-by-74 inches. If larger, simply trim it to size.
2. Fold the 76-inch side of the drop cloth over itself to create a 1-inch area of double thickness. That is, you should take the top 1 inch of the longer side of the drop cloth and fold it over. There will be a 1-inch double-thick layer running across the top of the cloth.
3. Sew one length of stitching across the bottom edge of the 1-inch double-thick layer. This will be the top of your shower curtain.
4. Punch a hole every 3 1/2 inches across the top of the shower curtain (the double thick layer). If you do not have a hole punch you can use a scissors and cut a small hole.
5. Wash your canvas drop cloth in warm water and let air dry. The shower liner will shrink slightly on first washing.
6. Hang your shower liner by placing shower hooks through holes in the top of curtain.
