Europa Universalis
III, or Eu3, was released in January 2007 as a sequel to Europea Universalis II, or Eu2, which initially appeared for Windows and Mac OS X systems in November 2001. Both are empire-building strategy games that require the player to utilize military strategies and manage economies, diplomacy and trade to win.
Eu2 Overview
In Europa Universalis II, players manage a single empire across multiple centuries, ranging from 1419 and Joan D'Arc to 1820 and the Age of Napoleon. Along the way, the player must build a powerful economy, create a robust military presence, promote scientific and technological developments, nourish burgeoning religions and explore and conquer new provinces. In addition, the player may start out as any empire, whether it is the Inca, the Dahomey or the Chinese. And unlike traditional strategy games, Eu2 occurs in real time, and not in turns.
Eu3 Overview
Europa Universalis III hosts a shorter 346-year range, but players have the added option to start the game at any date within that time period. One huge notable difference between Eu2 and Eu3 is the incorporation of a much more polished 3-D graphics engine that simplifies gameplay, making it easier for newbies to learn play. Plus, the "board game" aesthetics have been replaced with what Strategy Informer reviewer John Wallace describes as "land, cities and armies" with a more "organic feel."
Historical Differences
Eu3 has a slightly less historical element than its predecessor. The former was designed more as a historical simulator in which you merely made slight adjustments to actual history and then watched events unfold. With Europa Universalis III, historical events take a slightly less precedence, so you have more power to define your nation's future. Drastic random events can occur from time to time, but they won't necessarily be tied to history.
Additional Differences
Eu3 hosts many more countries, including large ones like Ming China and tiny ones like Maldives. Eu2 is more mod friendly, as all game data is stored in easy-to-edit text files., and hundreds of mods for custom campaigns and landscapes are available. Such modding isn't present the same level with Europa Universalis III, but it does have numerous expansion packs, including Napoleon's Ambition, In Nomine, Heir to the Throne and Divine Wind.
