Use paint chips to look at different color combinations.
In many homes, the kitchen and the great room stand next to each other, and the decorating scheme of one influences the other. The color of paint you use in each of these rooms gives the room its own character, but a problem can present itself when you try to introduce multiple paint colors into these adjoining rooms. The solution to this lies in choosing a color scheme that fits both rooms, but using the color combinations slightly differently in each room so that each room still stands on its own.
Instructions
1. Choose a color scheme. Go to the paint store and look at paint chips side by side. As you look, notice which color combinations appeal to you. Ask yourself if you like analogous colors together such as blues and purples or if you'd rather have some contrasting colors together such as yellow and red. Select at least three colors that you like together and could envision in both your kitchen and great room.
2. Select one color to be the primary color you'll feature in the kitchen and one that you'll highlight in the great room. For example, if you've chosen brown, cream and blue as your colors, make brown your kitchen color, cream the color of the great room and blue the accent color for both. You'll use all the colors in each room, but for now, you want to get the proportions for each color worked out.
3. Paint the kitchen its primary color. Add this color to the main walls of the kitchen. If you're planning on painting the cupboards, paint these with the main color you've chosen for the great room. Paint the trim around the windows, baseboards and around the door jambs with your accent color. Choose kitchen accent pieces such as artwork, canister sets and towels in the accent color as well.
4. Cover the walls of the great room with the primary color you've chosen for this room. Paint the window areas or add stenciling to the walls and furniture using the main color you've featured in the kitchen. Buy accent pieces such as throw pillows, rugs or a ceramic plate collection that features the accent color for both rooms.
