When planning to paint the interior of your home, you want to make sure that you have the perfect colors for the style of your house. If you want to paint each of the rooms with different color schemes, you want to make sure that they are complementary, or at least have one element in common. Use a decorator's color wheel to help you learn which colors work together.
Complementary Colors
Choose complementary colors for painting the inside of your home. Complementary colors are opposite each other on the color wheel. Many of the complementary colors are opposites and not ones you would normally think would go together. Some of the complementary colors on the color wheel are red and green, blue and orange, and yellow and violet. Paint your walls one of the colors of the color wheel and then use the complementary color to add accents, decorations and accessories to the room. For example, if you want to paint your walls red, use green to paint the trims or add a few highlights to the decor of the room.
Secondary Colors
Use secondary colors that you find along the color wheel. The color wheel begins with the three basic primary colors of red, blue and yellow. All the colors in between have varying mixtures of two primary colors. Secondary colors include blue-green, red-orange, yellow-green and red-violet. The secondary colors allow you to incorporate different shades of the two colors when trying to find accessories to coordinate with your interior color scheme.
Coordinating Colors
Choose paint colors from an existing piece of artwork or other accessory that you just have to have in that room. You can even take the fabric from a pillow or bedspread and pull the colors out to create an interior paint scheme. If the accessory has green in it, choose several green paint chips until your find just the right color. Do this for the rest of the colors in the pieces, from the lightest to the darkest, from the boldest to the most neutral. Use these colors to create the color scheme for the room. Decide whether you want to use the bold or the neutral colors for the walls, and then choose more accessories or paint trim colors to go along with that.
One Color
Paint your interior walls one color and then use other shades of the same color for the trim and accessories. For example, if you want to paint your room completely in blue, use varying shades of blue for the furniture, curtains and other accessories. Make sure to include some muted tones, such as white, cream or brown, to break up whatever color you choose.
