Achieve Colonial Beach Cottage House Exterior

Cottage fence

You don't have to live at the beach to appreciate and enjoy the beauty of a New England beach cottage. The beach cottage design offers charming curb appeal that invites you to grab a cold lemonade, kick off your shoes, and relax.

Instructions

1. Siding and Windows

Wooden cedar shakes in weathered gray or brown are typical of New England beach cottages. You can forgo the expense of residing your house and instead, paint your house to mimic the color of weathered cedar shakes. Or, you can paint your house blue-gray or pale white and still be in keeping with the beach cottage charm.

If the house is blue or gray, add white shutters and white, wooden window boxes; a brown house could have white or light sea green shutters and window boxes. You would only need to add window boxes on those windows that could use the added visual weight to balance the view of your house. If the house is pale white, go with black or deep green shutters with window boxes in the contrasting color (e.g. black shutters, green flower box). Shutters could be board and batten or fixed louvers.

2. Walkway and Surround

Create the walkway with flagstone, pebbles, or brick. A white picket fence can be added as security to keep small children or pets confined, as a focal point, or to hide utility items like trash cans or power/cable boxes.

If there's a front porch, add white wicker furniture or Adirondack chairs in light blue, light sea green, yellow, or white. Add floral pillows with a brilliant background color (like white and/or yellow flowers on a red background) made with fabric that is suitable for outdoor use (fade, mildew resistant). Hang a nautical bell by the front door.

3. Landscaping

Plant blue hydrangea on either side of the walkway where it meets the front door/porch or place one each at the two front corners of the lot. Flower boxes can be filled with red or pink geraniums.
