Easy-to-Make Butterfly Necklaces
Butterfly necklaces are appropriate for girls and women of all ages. Some easy methods for making your own butterfly necklace: Sculpt a butterfly out of polymer clay such as Fimo or Sculpey; create one with beads; make a butterfly out of paper mache or even out of Shrinky Dinks or other shrinkable plastic.
Sculpt A Butterfly
Create a pendant or series of charms out of polymer clay such as Fimo or Sculpey. Print out the shape or outline of a butterfly that you like, roll the clay out thin and cut the butterfly shape out of the clay. You can sculpt this basic butterfly shape so that its wings stand up, or add another layer in a different color to make the wings. Make a hole at the top to attach the pendant to the necklace, or make holes on the sides, to attach beads using jump rings.
Before baking the butterfly (following the instructions on the clay package) you can carve lines into it, add texture from old jewelry or other items you have around the house or make indentations where rhinestones or beads can be glued on after it is baked.
When your butterfly has been baked and cooled, attach it to a chain, a wire, or cord using jump rings or by simply stringing the necklace cord through the hole that you made. There are also polymer clay molds available for purchase in the shape of butterflies.
Just Bead It
You can bead a butterfly using several methods with cord or wire. Use different materials to produce results varying from childlike--with large or pony beads--to vintage--with seed beads--or sparkly--with crystal beads. Choose a pattern such as the one available from makingfriends.com, for stringing cord through beads.
Or shape the butterfly out of wire, adding beads as you go. Use about 6 inches of wire for each side to make the wings, and two 3-inch segments of wire to make the center and antennae. To assemble, wrap one final 6-inch piece of wire around the center of the butterfly to form the body and keep all the other wire pieces together. Both types of beaded butterflies can then be strung onto a chain or attached to a necklace using jump rings.
Other Options
You can also make butterfly necklace pendants and charms out of paper mache, glue paste, newspaper, tissue paper and pipe cleaners. Alternate four layers of glue paste and newspaper, allow to dry and then cut out butterfly shapes. Cover the shapes in tissue paper and allow to dry. Make the same butterfly shape out of pipe cleaners, then glue this shape onto the paper mache base. Allow to dry and then decorate with paints.
Cut Shrinky Dinks or other shrinkable plastic into butterfly shapes with a hole for attachment. Cook the shapes according to package directions and decorate and embellish with beads, glitter glue, rhinestones or sequins.
