Zebra print bedding is a modern look.
Black and white is the basis of a sophisticated bedroom decor, especially if you add zebra-striped bedding into the mix. The scheme works in a large or small bedroom. The bedroom doesn't have to have an African flair or look like a zoo, if you focus on the prints and colors and don't go wild with safari accessories. Keep it thoroughly modern and sleek with glass-topped night tables, clean lines and black lacquer furniture.
Instructions
1. Choose a complementary color for accessories to brighten up the black-and-white theme of the zebra print. It could be yellow, orange or aqua, for example. Metallic colors look good with black and white as well. Red is an accent color that pops.
2. Paint the walls a soft gray color. It will carry the black-and-white color scheme forward but won't be overwhelming as red or another dramatic color would be, or make the room into a cave, as black would do.
3. Lay medium-gray, fuzzy throw rugs on either side of the bed. Put a chest or bench at the bottom of the bed to act as a footboard. Lay a black chenille throw on the chest or bench.
4. Anchor the bed visually with black bed skirting. This shows off the zebra sheets, pillowcases and bedspread and doesn't compete with them. It also coordinates with the medium-gray throw rugs on the floor.
5. Put the bedding on the bed. Place two large, black, 24-inch pillows across the back of the bed against the headboard. Use three 24-inch pillows for a queen-sized bed. Put three (or five, depending on the size of the bed) red print throw pillows in front of the large pillows. Finish with two round black pillows and a white round pillow in the middle. The colors echo the black-and-white zebra print but add interest with geometric shapes.
6. Place off-white floor-to-ceiling curtains on each window, even if the windows are different sizes. The floor-to-ceiling length makes the windows look the same. Put black decorative side panel curtains on each window as well. The side panels aren't meant to close, just to be decorative.
7. Cut a zebra patterned flat sheet to 24 inches wide and twice the width of the window. Sew a tunnel through the top for a curtain rod and hem the bottom. Use this as a valence for the windows.
8. Finish the look with large houseplants, such as a schefflera, palm or dracaena plant. Group three in black pots and up light them from the back so they throw shadows on the wall. Don't go overboard and create a jungle look.
9. Add a black-lacquered, glass-topped night table on either side of the bed. Put matching red-based lamps on the night tables. Frame a black-and-white piece of artwork with a red mat and a black frame. Place it on the opposite wall of the bed. Frame three smaller black-and-white pieces of artwork with red mats and black frames and put those on one of the other walls, which one depends on where the windows and doors are in the room and where you've placed the mat. The three prints carry the theme through the room.
