A fresh coat of paint can make your flagpole look like new.
Flagpoles age the same as any exterior surface. The surface becomes chipped and worn due to the exposure to the elements. Painting the flagpole breathes new life into the structure. Always choose an exterior paint rated for the material of the pole, such as wood or metal. The key to making the paint adhere properly is in the preparation of the surface. A light sanding with 120-grit sandpaper removes existing paint and provides a rough surface for the paint to grasp.
Instructions
1. Set up a ladder so that you can reach the top of the flagpole.
2. Sand the surface of the pole with 120-grit sandpaper working from the top to the bottom. Clean the pole with water from a water hose to remove dust and debris. Allow the surface to dry before painting.
3. Paint the pole from the top to the bottom with a trim paint roller. Trim paint rollers are about 3 inches long. Apply exterior primer and allow the primer to dry fully. Add one to two coats of exterior paint to complete the project.
