Fresh paint Asbestos Siding Shingles

Do not use sandpaper or a metal putty knife to remove the old paint

Asbestos shingles are a cement based type of siding. Although they are no longer used in construction due to health concerns, they were a popular type of siding several decades ago because they do not expand or contract in varying temperatures. If you would like to paint asbestos siding shingles, you will need to take specific safety precautions to prevent the asbestos from releasing into the air. In addition, you must condition the surface to accept paint adhesion, or you will end up with chipping and peeling paint.

Instructions

1. Wear a respirator to guard against inhalation of asbestos fibers.

2. Remove loose or peeling paint from the asbestos siding shingles using a pressure washer. Do not use sandpaper or a metal putty knife to remove the old paint. Allow the siding to dry completely.

3. Apply a coat of acrylic latex primer to the asbestos siding using a roller. Allow the primer to dry for three full hours.

4. Wash all painting tools with water.

5. Apply a coat of exterior acrylic latex paint to the asbestos shingles. Use a new, clean nap roller cover.
