Coat Tree Ideas

Coat Tree Ideas

Traditional coat trees essentially are tall vertical poles with hooks for hanging coats and hats. But today, designers have spun ordinary coat trees into creative designs that twist and arch just like authentic trees. Some coat trees resemble real trees with long, outstretched "branches" for hanging outerwear. Some have compartments in the base of the tree to hold wet umbrellas. Still others are wall stickers that resemble trees and have wall-mounted hooks for hanging coats and scarves. When selecting a coat tree, consider the decor and design of the hall entryway. Do not be afraid to select a unique tree that will add whimsy and boldness to home design.

Tree-Inspired Coat Trees

Select a coat tree that looks like an authentic tree. These trees often are made of wood or metal. They have arms that look like real branches, where guests can hang coats, scarves and hats. Some coat trees look natural and authentic--perfect for a cabin or lodge-like home. Others are more modern and sleek (see References). It is important to keep your hall decor in mind when selecting an authentic looking coat tree. Natural wood coat trees may appear out of place in a modern hallway.

Wall Sticker Coat Trees

Purchase a coat tree sticker set. These wall stickers adhere to a wall and look like a real tree. You add hooks directly into the wall and on top of the sticker's branches. To pull off the wall sticker coat tree, start with a blank wall in your hall entryway. Consider painting it a bold color to offset the black or white wall sticker. Wall sticker coat trees also work well in a child's room. Create a "dress-up nook," and use the sticker coat tree to hang boas, princess dresses and other costumes (see References).

DIY Tabletop Coat Tree

Consider making your own tabletop coat tree from natural branches. You can set this coat tree on a table in your hallway to collect small outwear--such as hats, scarves and mittens. You will need tall, sturdy branches (test durability by trying to break the branches in half). Bamboo stalks that are about 20 inches tall work well. You can purchase bamboo stalks from several online vendors (see Resources). Also, purchase a bucket of Plaster of Paris, a white craft molding medium, and a decorative metal trash can of your choice. Fill the trash can with the bamboo stalks at different angles. Ask someone to help hold the stalks in place. Then, mix the Plaster of Paris by following the directions on the concrete package and pour the mixture into the trash can about half way. Allow to harden, and then cover the top of the concrete with decorative, artificial moss that you can purchase from a craft store.
