With a little patience and careful choice of color and type of paint, a fresh coat of paint on your woodwork can really freshen up the interior of your home as well as add a new zest to your living place. Learn what it takes to correctly prepare the trim areas for painting and also to find out select the best possible colors for the job.
Instructions
1. Give the woodwork a good old-fashioned scrubbing with soap and warm water. After the wood has been scrubbed, be sure to rinse the area with some clear, cold water. Pay special attention to the upper side of any horizontal piece of wood where dust and dirt are sure to accumulate. You might want to use a drop cloth for this step, especially if there is nice carpet or fancy woodwork on the floor.
2. Scrape any hard, brittle and cracked paint with a paint scraper. Wood trim sometimes acquires a few spots of cracked paint, which will come loose when a paint scraper is pulled across the surface.
3. Spot paint any areas of bare wood with a primer-sealer paint. If oil paint has already been applied to the woodwork, then you will need to use an oil primer. However, if latex paint is present (the most likely scenario), you can continue with a latex topcoat or cover the wood with a glossy oil paint.
4. Choose a color for the woodwork that will accent the color of the walls in the room. Opposite colors sometimes work, but analogous (colors that are almost opposite, but not quite) work great in a two-tone room. Take your time when you paint the windows and doors, so you do not leave any drip marks.
5. Apply the paint by brush using long, steady strokes. Use a brush that is 3 or 4 inches wide with a slightly slanted tip.
6. Clean the brushes thoroughly after you finish. Latex paint gets cleaned up with soap and water, but you need paint thinner or turpentine to clean up an oil paint.
Always use a drop cloth when you paint.
