It can be a challenge to pick the right color to match your furniture and rugs.
Painting your walls is not easy or cheap, so getting it right the first time is important. Picking a color you like is essential, and picking a color that matches your furniture is equally critical. By methodically eliminating choices that don't look right with your furniture, you can find a color that looks great and brings together your decorating scheme in a way that looks professional and well thought out.
Instructions
1. Look at your current furniture and the colors you have chosen to decorate your home. If your inclination is toward natural earthy colors and hardwoods, earth tones and neutrals will be more appropriate for your walls than bright colors or pastels. If your inclination is toward brighter colors, dramatic contrasts, whites and synthetic fibers and materials, your walls should also be bright and bold to bring your color schemes together. If your furniture is not coordinated in any way, neutrals will work the best.
2. Choose a range of paint swatches in your chosen color category (neutrals, earth tones or bright colors). Paint swatches can be found at your local home improvement store or paint store.
3. Consult with your family members and roommates (if applicable) to help you eliminate some of the paper swatches. If you are choosing the paint color by yourself, hold the paint swatches up to your walls and your furniture. Eliminate the swatches based on your instincts and preferences. Narrow down your choices to three or four paint colors.
4. Buy samples of your paint choices and paint 3-by-3-foot swatches of each color on your walls. Allow the swatches to dry before making your final decision. View the swatches in natural daylight, dusk and evening light. Each time you view the paint swatches, pay attention to the way the paint looks against the furniture and carpet or flooring in the room. Watch for colors that clash. Choose your final color based on your findings.
