Proper Temperature For Outside Painting

Paint will enhance the appearance of your home as well as protect it from damage

Painting the exterior of your house is one of the most cost-effective ways to change its entire appearance. Before you start, make sure the temperature outside is conducive to obtaining the best possible result.

External Temperature

The optimal temperature for painting an exterior surface is 50 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit.

Time Frame

Picking the time of year when the temperatures are best for painting is dependent upon where you live. Summer through early fall in the northern states, and fall through winter in the southern states will most likely give you temperatures consistently within the target range.

Effects

If you have no choice but to paint when it's above 70 degrees F, paint in shaded areas whenever possible. When the painted area is in the sun, the paint may dry too quickly and leave brush marks.

Warning

Painting when the temperatures are outside the range of 50 to 85 degrees F will affect the paint's consistency, making it more difficult to apply and adhere.

Considerations

According to Thisoldhouse.com, moisture content of the surface to be painted should be below 12 percent. Depending upon where you live, the temperatures may need to be near the high end of the scale before the moisture in the air dissipates enough to paint.
