Sand Paint on Paper
Sand painting is an art that involves pouring colored sand on a surface. If you have tried painting with typical oil or acrylic paints and are looking for a new way to express yourself, try sand painting. This colorful art is believed to originate in the Native American culture but has spread widely throughout the world. One of the best things about sand painting is that anyone can enjoy it, children and adults.
Instructions
1. Sketch an image that you want to make, such as a nature scene, animal or an abstract design. Draw the image so the shapes are easy to recognize; avoid putting in too many details. If you are drawing a person, sketch the basic shapes of the human body from a distance, not the physical features of the face.
2. Determine the colors that you want to use in your sand painting. You can obtain colored sand at a local craft store. Depending on your preferences, you can use bold colors such as blue, green, red and yellow. Or you may want to stick to neutral colors in your artwork. Lighten a sand color by adding white sand to it or darken a sand color with black sand. Keep colors separate by pouring them into small bowls or cups.
3. Use a brush to apply glue to a part of your sketch in the same fashion as you would if you were going to normally paint on canvas. Stay inside the lines of your sketch so it remains neat. Brush the glue to the edge of the line so the edges stay clean and defined.
4. Select the sand that you want to use for that section. Pinch the sand between your two fingers and sprinkle it over the wet glue. Using a teaspoon can help you finish large areas quickly. Apply a heavy layer of sand to the area. If there are areas that aren't fully covered with sand and are a bit skimpy, add more glue to the area and sprinkle more sand on it.
5. Repeat the same technique to cover other areas in your sketch that you want to paint with the same color sand. Let the glue dry on the image for 30 minutes or so.
6. Tilt your paper or flip it over until the excess sand runs off it. If you want, you can save this sand to use later in other color mixtures.
7. Repeat the same techniques used in steps 3 to 5 to work with another color. Always sprinkle one color of sand at a time so that the colors don't get muddy and mixed up. Continue this process until you have painted in all the areas of your image with colored sand.
