Dark colors help to hide flaws in older trim.
When it comes to selecting paint colors for trim, taste accounts for a large part of the decision making process. Before you choose a color based purely on personal preference, consider how paint shades affect the overall appearance of the trim.
Light Colors
Light shades of paint are not appropriate for older homes that have trim marred with subtle cracks and other flaws. Colors like tan and white will accentuate these imperfections, leading to unattractive results.
Dark Colors
Dark shades of paint are best suited for homes that have trim with minor imperfections. Colors like dark blue and brown will hide these flaws and promote an attractive finish. If your home is relatively new and in good condition, you can get away with a light color of paint.
Considerations
Not all trim is located in an area that accents the home. Sometimes, trim is placed on a house to seal large seams between panels. If you paint this type of trim a different color than the paneling, you may end up with unattractive results. Paint this particular trim the same color as the surrounding paneling to help it blend in.
