Some people are more productive when walls are painted muted colors.
Paint color can have an effect on mood and productivity in a business office or workplace, writes Nancy Kwallek, Ph.D., although the effect depends on how an individual perceives color. People who can filter out external stimuli may be more productive when walls are painted vivid colors, and those who are more affected by their environment tend to work better surrounded by light or muted colors.
Bright Colors
Use bright "punch" colors to create divisions, identify different departments or functional areas, and to break monotony in the business office, suggests the Sherwin-Williams paint company. Generation X workers tend to be more comfortable with eclectic color choices, and bright colors create a more dynamic, high-energy feel. Bright colors such as celery green, denim blue, or terracotta can be especially suitable if your business deals with the creative arts or a youthful, high-tech product.
Neutral Tones
Neutral colors are more soothing and easier to match to office furniture. If your business office deals with somber topics such as legal and accounting issues, warm neutral colors may be more fitting. Instead of plain gray or pale beige, consider taupe or light brown for extra warmth. Paint one accent wall a deeper shade to show off your framed diplomas and certificates.
Complement Existing Decor
Not only do you need to choose colors that suit your business and make people want to come to work and be productive, but you also need to consider your existing decor. Sherwin-Williams suggests choosing colors that make your office equipment less noticeable, if it's older or unattractive. Pick a color that's closer to the main color of the equipment. To add a little contrast and brightness, paint the bottom half of the walls in a color that disguises business equipment, and the top half a lighter shade.
Faux Painting
Faux and decorative painting can individualize your business office. Faux marble or wood grain can lend a rich, traditional feel to your walls and woodwork. Color washing, glazing, and striping lend a sunny, more whimsical effect. With faux painting, you can use a range of colors, from saturated to subtle, as well as specialty paints such as metallic, pearl, and suede finish.
