Ragging Painting Technique

Paint.

Ragging is a type of faux painting that creates the illusion of texture on a flat surface. Ragging is usually applied to interior wall surfaces, but it can also be used on fireplace mantels, doors, cabinets and wooden furniture. The technique of ragging involves latex paint and a latex glaze in coordinating colors and a rag (or rag roller). It's simple enough for do-it-yourself projects. In some cases, it's helpful to have 2 people doing the job.

Set Up

Set up your work area with a drop cloth or plastic sheeting. Paint on your base color, using latex semi-gloss or satin paint. It should be fully dried before you begin your ragging process.

Ragging-On Technique

Pour glaze into a roller pan and dip your bunched up rag or rag-roller directly into the glaze. Roll or rub off the excess, and apply it directly to the wall. One technique is to create a cylinder shape with the rag, bunching in the loose ends and rolling it over the base coat.

Ragging-Off Technique

Fill the paint tray with glaze, and paint it on the wall with a roller. While the glaze is still wet, take a cotton rag (something lint-free) and bunch it up. Apply the rag to the wet glaze, which will remove the glaze in varying patterns. Repeat the process until the wall is finished.

Painting Technique

Start at the ceiling, and work in all directions (vertically, diagonally, horizontally) to create a varied, natural textured appearance. Be consistent with how much of the base color you want to show through the ragging.

Large Surface Technique

If you're working on a large surface area for the ragging-off technique, you run the risk of having the glaze dry before you can begin your ragging-off technique. Work with a partner who can follow you right after your application of the glaze to avoid this problem.
