Choose several colors from the same color strip when faux mesh painting.
Roller meshing faux painting is a two-step decorative paint technique giving dimension and color to a solid color surface. Choosing the right colors for the technique is critical for a successful project. Picking the wrong colors may give your walls the look of outdated, '80s faux painting. Roller mesh painting is ideal for contemporary as well as Old World interior design styles.
Instructions
1. Choose a single color from a paint strip. Go up or down the paint strip and pick a second color one to two shades lighter or darker. A third color on the same color strip may also be added into the faux finish project for additional dimension.
2. Practice the technique. Paint the basecoat color, the darkest color on the paint strip, on a piece of cardboard using a mini roller. Allow to dry. Apply paint to the roller mesh paint tool using the second color chosen from the paint strip. Roll onto the cardboard practice piece. Do not overlap areas. Allow to dry. Add the third, or lightest, color onto the practice board with the mesh roller tool. Practice the technique exactly how you plan to paint your wall.
3. Look at the colors during different times of day, including early morning, afternoon and evening. Use different types of light, including natural sunlight and artificial light from nearby lamps. Inspect the colors to ensure they are pleasing to the eye. If the contrast of colors is too sharp, continue to practice with different colors on cardboard. Otherwise, take the roll mesh project directly to the wall. Do not make any changes in coloration or technique when applying the final finish.
