Cape Cod House Interior Planning Ideas

Wicker furniture plays is a prominent element in Cape Cod inspired interior design.

Cape Cod is a popular summer destination for many Americans. Homeowners who are planning to renovate their Cape Cod style house or to decorate a newly acquired beach property have a variety of design styles to emulate. Those who favor a traditional style can find inspiration from the classic Cape Cod interior. This look is characterized by a quaint cottage charm combined with nautical and beach-themed elements.

Colors

A popular color combination used in Cape Cod interiors includes various hues of green and white, inspired by beach cabins from the 1940's. Use white as the dominant color, for example on walls and large furniture such as sofas. Save the green for smaller elements such as window treatments and decorative accessories. Pair a light shade of green, such as sage, with ivory or off-white. If you are working with a dark green, complement it with a bright white. As an alternative to green and white, pair white with a soft, washed-out shade of red, yellow or blue.

Furniture

Choose simple furniture pieces crafted from light or painted wood, wicker or rattan. Accent chairs and sofas with pillows and blankets in simple patterns, such as muted color combinations of stripes and plaids. Choose dressers and drawer units with glass knobs or install glass knobs on your existing pieces.

If you are unable to find wicker or rattan furniture that works with your decor, incorporate these materials with baskets and other practical storage containers. Use the baskets for storing magazines and other reading material next to the coffee table or for displaying hand towels and lotions on bathroom counters.

Walls, Windows and Floors

Hang simple window treatments that allow as much light as possible to enter the room. Examples include painted wooden blinds and curtains made of sheer or lacy fabrics. For the walls, select light colored floral wallpaper or a wallpaper border. If you opt for a wallpaper border, use it in conjunction with white or off-white wainscoting or wall panels for a crisp, clean look.

Hardwood floors are often an element of beach cabins, making hardwood an appropriate choice for your Cape Cod interior. To enhance the appearance of a wood floor, paint it or arrange floral, sisal or braided rugs over an unfinished wood plank floor.

Accessories

Use beach- and sea-inspired accessories as final touches for your Cape Cod interior. Create centerpieces by filling large glass bowls or vases with purchased decorative seashells or ones collected at the beach. Or fill a glass container with beach sand, alternating layers of sand and seashells. Group decorative lighthouses, sailboats and other nautical elements on tables and shelves.
