Using the guidelines recommended by home experts, you can properly paint your interior wood door for a smooth, clean final product. Cleaning the interior door and proper preparation work are the keys to a quality finished product. Home experts recommend sanding the door at a few points in the process to achieve a smooth surface. They also outline in what sequence to paint the different areas of the door. This method can speed up the process and make it less labor-intensive.
Instructions
1. Wipe the door with a clean cloth and a household cleaner to remove dirt build up.
2. Sand the trim and door with a 120-grit silicon-carbide sandpaper. Sanding old paint helps the new paint to adhere while sanding bare wood removes the raised grain and levels sharp edges. Hold the sandpaper in your hand to get into depressions. For detailed moldings, use a sanding sponge or block that is similar in shape to the molding.
3. Dust the wood after sanding with a cleaning brush or remove the dust with a shop vacuum. Wipe down the door with a clean cloth to remove any residual dust.
4. Use a tapered paint brush to brush the wood door in this order: the rails, stiles, molding and the panel. Work from the center out. Allow the primer to dry overnight. The next day sand lightly with a 220-grit sandpaper. Clean up the dust before painting.
5. Apply the first coat of paint with a tapered paint brush, following the same sequence as with the primer. When the paint dries, sand the door lightly with a 220-grit sandpaper. Wipe away the dust with a clean cloth. Apply the final coat.
