As the area of the shutters is generally small compared to the house exterior, you can make bold choices to liven up a more conservative house color if you choose. You can also use the shutter color to intensify an already lively colored house by going with a big contrast. The choice is up to you and your taste, though it is a good idea to check local codes before starting the process.
Instructions
1. Examine your house by taking a walk around it and thinking about the existing color. Do this at different times of the day so you can view it in different light. If you are painting the exterior and the shutters at the same time, take some paint swatches outside and compare colors at different points on the house.
2. Look around your neighborhood to see the colors others have used. You may want to blend into a scheme or do something a little different. Either way it is good to see the colors of nearby homes.
3. Decide on what feel you want for your exterior. Go with a complementary color (such as purple shutters on a yellow house) for a bold impact. If the house is a neutral or cream color, you can paint shutters just about any color in the spectrum and have a good match. For historic style, use a color with neutral tones, such as blue-gray.
4. Test your selection by painting a couple of shutters with some paint samples. Leave them up for a few days so you can see them on both cloudy and sunny days prior to making a final decision.
