Use an etching primer on mobile home siding.
If you would like to paint your mobile home siding, consider a crucial point before you race into the application process. Mobile home siding is aluminum, a nonporous, durable material poorly suited for paint adhesion. If you attempt to coat bare aluminum siding with paint, rampant shedding will ensue. You must condition the mobile home siding by applying a special acidic-based etching primer. Once the siding is properly prepared, it will accept its new finish. Choose a coating specifically designed for exterior surfaces, or you will ultimately end up with paint failure.
Instructions
1. Wash the mobile home siding, using a pressure washer stocked with a low-pressure tip. Wait approximately two to four hours for the aluminum siding to dry.
2. Protect areas adjacent to the mobile home siding from paint overlap by covering them with masking paper, drop cloths and painter's tape.
3. Coat the mobile home siding with galvanized metal etching primer, using a roller stocked with a nap cover. Promote a slick, professional-looking finish by smoothing the wet primer with a 3-to-4-inch paintbrush. Wait a minimum of four hours for the etching primer to dry and cure.
4. Wash each of your painting tools with water.
5. Coat the primed mobile home siding with acrylic latex paint, using the clean roller, equipped with a new nap cover. Smooth the wet acrylic latex paint, using the clean paintbrush. Wait two hours for the aluminum siding to dry.
