Propane is a gas commonly used to heat homes. The tank used to hold propane can be an eye sore. Many home owners with propane tanks choose to paint their tanks to make them blend with the home and landscape. Proper care should be used when painting a propane tank to ensure it is done in a safe manner.
Instructions
1. Check the Safety Codes in Your State
Some states have strict requirements about the colors that can be used to paint a propane tank. If you fail to meet the color requirments you may be unable to fill your propane tank in the future. Check you state laws to see how you are allowed to paint your tank before proceeding.
2. Choosing the Colors
When painting a propane tank it is critical to use heat reflective, or light, colors. Dark colors absorb heat and home owners are warned not to use heat absorbing colors on their propane tanks. Light gray, off-white and silver are the best colors to use for a propane tank. But this does not mean you can not use the colors in a creative and artistic way.
3. Preparing the Tank
Before painting the propane tank, all rust should be removed by using a wire brush. Rust compromises the surface of the tank and if a tank become rusty, the dark colored rust also absorbs heat. Painting the tank will inhibit the future development of rust and safe guard the tank.
4. Prime the Tank
Use a white or off-white primer made specifically for painting propane tanks. Krylon produces spray paint for this purpose.
5. Painting the Tank
You can gently tint the off white propane paint to make very light pastel greens, blues, yellows and beiges if it is allowed in your state. You can use stencils to create letters or predefined shapes. You can also use sponges to apply the paint. Murals can also be painted by transfering an image using carbon paper to the propane tank before painting. For more information on creating a mural see the resource section below.
