Home designers focus on creating a coherent design inside and out that is pleasing to the eye. In order to accomplish this task, focus on the details, both large and small. Exterior Materials Choices

You can use many different materials on the outside of a home. One of the most common is aluminum sliding, which has certain advantages. Siding is inexpensive and may be easily cleaned. It comes in a wide variety of colors, is energy-efficient and can be cut into different shapes and sizes. Another popular material for exterior walls is brick. Brick adds a finished, polished look to any home, and the material can be expected to last for many years without further maintenance efforts. Brick comes in many different shades and several different colors. Another common choice for exterior walls is a stone façade. Stone also comes in many different sizes and colors, is durable and adds an upscale aura to any home. Stone may be more expensive than other exterior choices.

Landscaping Choices

Landscaping refers to the placement of materials used on the home site. The materials used may be hard, such as concrete fountains and decks, or softer material, such as flowers and trees. Proper landscaping helps the home fit in with the surrounding area. Consider the type of materials you would like to use. An ideal landscaping plan will work with the climate where the house is located. If the home is in a drier climate, such as the Southwest, it may be best to use a rock garden in the front yard. Compliment the garden with plants that require little water such as cacti. If the house is located in an area where rainfall is plentiful, take advantage of that fact. Use small bushes, perennial plants and annual flowers to add color and life to the front yard. Plant larger trees and climbing vines in the backyard to help create a sense of privacy.

Create Separate Outdoor Spaces

Provide a space to enjoy the outdoors. Exterior home design should help integrate the outdoors and indoors. A front porch can provide a welcome space to escape the heat and interact with neighbors. Make it attractive with intricate, carved moldings and comfortable seating. Add room in the back of the house to provide a transitional space between the house and the outdoors. Attach a deck that can be reached from the kitchen, or add a gazebo in a picturesque corner of the property to provide a place for outdoor picnics.
