Set up a ladder with the help of an assistant.
If you need to set up a ladder on the side of your house so that you can paint your home's exterior, then you'll need to follow proper safety instructions to ensure that the ladder doesn't fall over and that you don't hurt yourself. Ask a friend for assistance to get started or to hold the base of the ladder steady while you work.
Instructions
1. Remove debris, tools and other items from beneath the ladder. Do not place a tarp or anything else under the ladder.
2. Level the ground with a shovel in the area where you'll place the ladder. You also can purchase a ladder with ladder levelers, which are located on the bottom of the ladder and help to give the ladder equal footing. If the ground is soft or grassy, turn the ladder levelers up so that the spiky ends sink into the ground. Use the flat side of the ladder levelers when the ground is hard and dry.
3. Place the ladder against the side of the house so that the distance from the ladder's base to the side of the house is 1/4 of the the height of the ladder when it's resting normally. Use the measuring tape to record the ladder's height. Position the ladder accordingly, which should end up creating a 75-degree angle, according to This Old House. Make sure the fly section of the ladder, which is the part of the ladder that moves upward, faces away from the side of the house.
4. Install a ladder stabilizer around windows. Place ladder jacks on the back of a Type I or IA ladders by hooking them onto two rungs of the ladder.
