Examine the safety guide on your ladder before beginning work.
When inexperienced amateurs attempt to paint their homes' exteriors, they tend to treat all surfaces in the same manner regardless of the items' compositions. This often leads to unexpected paint chipping due to inadequate adhesion. Unlike wood paneling, metal gutters are nonporous. This trait leaves them unable to absorb the adhesives within primer and paint. Combat this dilemma by conditioning the gutters with an acidic primer made specifically to etch metal surfaces. Apply the etching primer and finish with a particular brush, or the gutters may dry marred with unattractive flaws.
Instructions
1. Wash the metal gutters with a pressure washer. Spray the washer from left to right along the length of the gutters, maintaining a minimum of 4 feet between the gutters and the washer at all times. Let the gutters dry for a full day.
2. Access the gutters with a ladder.
3. Protect surfaces next to the metal gutters by covering them with painter's tape. Protect driveways, patios and other areas below the gutters with drop cloths.
4. Affix a metal bucket hook to the handle on your plastic 1-gallon painter's pot, using the attached clip.
5. Pour 1/2 gallon etching primer into your pot.
6. Scale your ladder and attach the painter's pot to its side, using the metal bucket hook.
7. Coat the metal gutters with metal etching primer, using a polyester paintbrush. Brush horizontally, smoothing runs as they occur. Work slowly and carefully, or stains may occur.
8. Descend the ladder and move it to underneath an unpainted surface. Apply the primer to the new section as you did the first. Continue this process until the entire gutter is primed. Wait two hours for the gutter to dry.
9. Wash the brush with tap water.
10. Paint the metal gutters with acrylic latex paint in the same manner as you primed them. Wait two hours for the gutters to dry.
