Earth tones are a common color for farmhouses.
"At the heart of all farm life was the farmhouse." states Leah Rosch and Keith Scott Morton in the book "American Farmhouses." Rosch and Morton argue that the farmhouse is hard to pin down architecturally, as families often changed the structure of farmhouses throughout time, to fit their changing needs. However, when it comes to painting the exterior of a farmhouse, you can paint it any color of the rainbow that you like. However, you should do justice to the bucolic setting that surrounds the farmhouse.
Classic White
White is an traditional color to paint the exterior of farmhouses. White is a color that is bright, without being abrasive. White allows your house to pop out clearly against the landscape, making it easier to locate in the dark. You don't have to paint the entire exterior white; select a dark but rich color for the doors, window trim and porch railings. Strong colors such as navy blue or evergreen give the farmhouse a slight decorative quality while maintaining the classic appearance of the white.
Colors that Pop
Bright, cheerful vibrant colors reflect the purpose of the farmhouse as a place for productivity, new life and transformation. Colors such as red or yellow allow the farmhouse to accentuate itself against the landscape in a lively manner that isn't as strictly traditional as white. At the same time, red and yellow aren't such wild colors that they alienate the farmhouse from the rest of the landscape. Use more neutral colors for the door and trim, such as cream or light chocolate brown. Alternatively, use a darker color such as royal blue or deep sage for a more regal effect.
Muted Colors
Muted, earthy colors allow a farmhouse to blend more succinctly into the landscape, forging a stronger connection with nature. Colors that are most suitable for this effect are coffee browns, hunter greens and deep cranberry reds. Select a different earthy color for the doors and trim. For example, if you paint the exterior of the house hunter green, use cranberry red for the trim and doors. Using an additional dark color helps the earthy effect be more powerful as opposed to a light color that would take away from this look. Alternatively, leave the wood unpainted and cover it with a light stain to highlight the natural hue of the wood.
