Color Matching & Home Designing

Color choice in home decorating is important to the look and feel of a home.

When decorating a home there are infinite options. The choice of color and decorate can be a challenging task. There are many things to take into consideration, such as choosing furniture, but also making sure significant pieces of art and other decorations stand out. There are many resources that can help you decide on what colors to use and help you decorate your home beautifully.

Color Coordinating

An important thing to think about when decorating a room is color coordination. While some colors may seem not to go together, you can in fact make any colors go together, according to Jane Lockhart, a contributing writer at HGTV. She says it is all a matter of how you put the colors together, with the paint and decoration. For example, take orange and brown. These colors were popular in the 1970s. However, there are ways to use both of these colors to create a look that does not summon the 70s, like using a light colored couch, but decorating it with orange and brown pillows, or using light brown as the main color of the room, but finding statues or other artwork that will bring out the orange of the color scheme.

Considerations

There are three major things to consider when deciding what colors to use in a room, according to Michelle Pollak, president of interior design firm The Lollipop Tree. These three things are your personal preference, how you are going to use the space (that is, for entertaining, dining and so on) and the physical features of the room (such as lighting and architecture). The feel of a room and the feel the owners want is meshed in the color palette.

Amount of Color

It is possible for color to become too overwhelming in a room. Interior designer DeAnna Radaj uses something called the "60-30-10" rule. This rule means that about 60 percent of a room should be one color. This 60 percent is normally the walls. The 30 percent should be the furniture or the cabinets, which should be another color. The last 10 percent should be small accents like plants and artwork.

Mood Colors

People like different colors for different rooms, but each color invokes a different mood. In "The Color Scheme Bible" by Anna Starmer, she outlines what feeling each color evokes. Pink will give off a fun, positive and feminine vibe, while red will evoke passionate, comforting feelings and it can also make a person develop an appetite. Orange can stimulate creativity and give off a cozy feeling. Yellow is a welcoming color. Green is a restful and balancing color. Blue will create a meditative, calm mood, and, finally, violet has a sexy, spiritual value to it.

Accent Colors

If you have a piece of furniture or architecture that you want to make sure is displayed in a room, a good way of doing this is by using accent colors. An accent color is a color used that "pops out" and makes other things of the color pop out in the room as well. For example, if you have a bright red painting that you want to stand out in a room, it would be best to have minimal color on the walls. Try to decorate around the characteristics of the piece. Try a light or cream colored couch, but put red pillows on it. Also, try putting other red accent pieces in the room, like statuettes or small sculptures, which would help the red in the painting pop as well.
